Create Hyper-V Base Image

on September 17 | in Hyper-V, Microsoft | by | with 1 Comment

Hi Geeks,
Creating a new Lab is always combined with a lot of time.
Most time is wasted waiting for updates. Time you could use for something more interesting.
Second Problem is, right next to the fact that you never have enough RAM, the hard disk capacity.
If you ever had 10 Virtually Machines running, (and SSDs are still expensive) you know what Im talking about.

So first thing I always do is…
Creating a Hyper – V Machine Template (Base Image)
So if youre interested to generate new machines in a hurry and save disc space in your lab, you should read this post.

Described below, I will explain how to do that in a Step – by – Step documentation.

Heres a short overview of the parts:
1. Create a full patched OS. All Updates, Java, .Net, etc. (Everything you need on “ALL” Systems)
2. Generalize with Sysprep
3. Compress disc
4. Ensure write – protection of disc
5. Create differencial disc based on Machine Template for futher Server

So lets start:
1. Create a full patched OS. All Updates, Java, .Net, etc. (Everything you need on “ALL” Systems)
Take care, you installed all Windows Updates. If you have monitoring clients, or other Software like (Java, .Net, etc), things you need on absolutly “ALL” machines, go ahead and install all of them.

2. Generalize with Sysprep
Next step, we have to prepare our base Image for generalization. To do that, please open a CMD prompt.
Change to the following directory:
cd\ “C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\”
and paste the following command:
sysprep.exe /Quiet /oobe /generalize /shutdown

3. Compress disc
After the machine shut down successfully, you can edit the virtual disc.

Choose the virtual disc you want to compress.

Choose compress

And finish.

4. Ensure write – protection of disc
In Windows Explorer right-click your Virtual Machines VHDX file and select “Properties”.
Make sure the checkbox “Write – Protection” is marked.

5. Create differencial disc based on Machine Template for futher Server
Create New Virtual Machine

Please make sure you create NO virtual disc at this time. Please finish without creating a disc.

Now its time to create a differential disc. Therefore we have to open the Virtual Machines property page, choose the empty IDE Controller and add a disc.

Select new disc

This is the most interesting setting, because we have to choose the differential disc and click next

Here we have to create the dependency to our generated Base Image

Have Fun

:-)
